Graduated offspring

Neither the Ford nor Prattley clans have any huge history in academia. In our parents day, a university education was almost unheard of outside of the professions (doctors, lawyers, theologians, etc.) the rest were expected to leave school and start some sort of employment. Things had improved somewhat by the time Annette and I left school but, even though Annette made high school, she still left school for work and overseas travel, while I had missed the point of education completely and couldn't wait to enter the 'real world'. It is, therefore, with great pleasure that we welcomed the second graduate into our family on Saturday.

Katie (now Blomfield) mother of four, formally graduated Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) after three years of intense study and work experience.
Katie joins Andrew (now a father of one), who graduated in 2015 with a Bachelor of Nursing and currently works in the mental health service.
As parents, we are proud of all our children and salute these two for achieving something that we never did. Well done Katie and Andrew - two fantastic achievements in two very worthwhile career choices.

Budge up!

Annette and I were never naive enough to imagine that being a parent stopped when the fledglings left home. But, since the nest emptied a few years ago, we have become rather accustomed to 'home' being a somewhat tranquil refuge to which we can both retreat at the end of a busy day or week.

That tranquility was interrupted at the beginning of this year when our son needed a roof over his head while he finished his nursing degree. Next weekend our youngest daughter joins him as the tenancy on her flat has come to an end and a replacement is not available. And so we find ourselves having to squeeze up our 'spread-outedness' as we loose our last 'spare' room. (Please don't ask to come and stay for a while - unless the floor will do.)

No, being a parent doesn't end when they leave home and, being a parent still comes with responsibilities. So, we squeeze up and make room, not only in a physical sense but in a relational sense too; for these returning children are not the same as those that left a few years back. They return with a maturity that they didn't possess before (and some lingering immaturity that we wish they had lost). They return with new habits and traits born of their recent freedom. Their expectations are different and have a validity that often challenges our own. There is a lot of making room to be done.

So, the cars are out of the garage. The garage is now 'storage' and the oldies must remember not to walk about the house in their underwear in the mornings. So much for 'retirement' :-)

A weekend of Hobbits

Ballerina Hobbit had a fourth birthday party this weekend and hobbits from all over the Shire descended upon Hobbiton.  Considering how quickly hobbit gatherings can get rather unruly, this one was very well behaved – the castle was not demolished and most of the food was eaten rather than thrown. And yet the hobbits seemed to totally enjoy themselves and the big people found time to relax, chat and enjoy the day.

Two of the hobbits were still here on Monday morning when I awoke bleary-eyed and paddled into the living room in my dressing gown. “Gandad, Gandad,” the smallest one cried, tugging at my beard for attention. “Yes, little one?” I managed, wondering why hobbits seem so bright so early. “And its not ‘Gandad’; it’s ‘Gandalf’ if you please.

Oxford A&P Show

It was good to get out with the camera again after an enforced break for a few weeks. The Oxford A&P show was blessed with a long weekend and fine weather and was 'buzzin' this year. Here are a few of the highlights:
